Since taking over The Jackal in 1999 we have received recognition both from local press and from within the industry itself, below are the highlights:
Culinary skills and effective marketing have combined to put The Jackal at Thurleigh in Bedfordshire back on the map.
Tenant Kevin Hanks and his partner/wife Julia have transformed the village pub into one of the most successful outlets in the tenanted estate run by brewer Charles Wells, clinching two top awards run by the brewery last year.
“Kevin, who spent many years as head chef in top restaurants and hotels, says: “we knew the market that we wanted would respond to the bistro-style food operation we were proposing. We like to think that we are still a village pub with seriously good restaurant food.”
Morning Advertiser Awards
“A village pub which has won two awards now in line for another.” “The Jackal in Thurleigh has beaten thousands of entries nationwide to be shortlisted for the Morning Advertiser’s best tenanted Pub of The Year Award.”
Bedfordshire Times and Citizen
“Charles Wells licensees Kevin and Julia of The Jackal, Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, took top honours in a recent competition to achieve the biggest improvement in summer sales of the brewer’s beers.”
“They received their award from brewery boss Tom Wells at a hospitality day for all winners at Newmarket racecourse.”
Morning Advertiser
“Word has it that The Jackal’s Sticky Toffee Puddings are fast becoming famous across the area. These homemade puddings are becoming -with just desserts- the signature dish of chef/proprietor Kevin Hanks.” “Its easy to see why, A challenge to find a more delicious pudding that also melted in the mouth so easily would be difficult to meet. The Jackal -once just for locals- now becoming a food destination, at only 15 minutes drive from Rushden, it isn’t that far away.”
Wellingborough and Rushden Evening Telegraph
Kevin and Julia Hanks tenants of the Jackal in Thurleigh, are finalists in the London and East Anglia region of the Licensee of the Year Competition, organised by The British Institute of Innkeeping (BII), Kevin noted for his bistro-style cooking said “we’re absolutely delighted.”
